7 Anxiety Facts You Need to Know Today
Raise your hand if you live with anxiety:
I hear you sister; me too. I've been struggling with a combination of anxiety and depression since elementary school. Therapy for me started in High School and has continued on and off since then.
One of the biggest things I experienced with my mental health is feeling alone in my struggle. If that's you too, then here are seven facts about anxiety you need to know from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America:
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S.
About half of the people diagnosed with depression also experience anxiety.
Anxiety disorders affect 25% of kids between 13 and 18 years old.
Forty million adults in the United States age 18 and older are affected by anxiety every year.
Women are twice as likely to be affected as men.
Only about 1/3 of those suffering receive quality and consistent treatment. That means 26 million are living without care.
Social Anxiety Disorder SAD affects 15 million adults in the U.S., and symptoms can begin as early as 13 years old.
In summary, you are not alone. The numbers help me feel like there are more people out there like me. Besides, the data, something else that has been an enormous help, is Sarah Wilson's book First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Journey Through Anxiety.
Described as a book for anyone experiencing anxiety or anyone who has a loved one who experiences anxiety, this is a read I highly recommend to everyone.
Give the book a try, and let me know what you think!
